Driver Comfort

The cockpit of the Sumo is much larger than one would expect in a sports car, probably larger than any other similar car. The seats are very comfortable and are available in either leather or vinyl. Controls are all easily operable with good foot pedal spacing and ideal gear shift position. The electrical controls for the lamps, windscreen wipers, horn, etc are all mounted on the steering column for comfort and ease of operation. Visibility in the sumo is superb, giving a good view of the road in all directions. Even drivers up to 6'6" (2m) tall will find the standard Sumo very comfortable.

Dash and Panache

Out on the road it is easy to see why the Sumo is so popular. Indeed, it is difficult to go anywhere without drawing admiring glances and the envious gaze of other road users and pedestrians. The rumbling exhaust, comfortable driving position and that feeling of being as one with the car, invites the open roads. The power to weight ratio in such a light car is enormous, allowing excellent acceleration from the lights. The Sumo's well balanced and positive handling characteristics provide the driver with the confidence of complete control. Driving is fun once again.

Practicality

The Sumo is equally at home in town. It's light responsive steering, excellent visibility and tight lock make it extremely easy to park. It has a large boot capable of holding all the luggage for a weekend away. For those winter days we supply an excellent set of wet weather equipment, comprising hood, frame and side windows to keep the elements at bay. The heater and demisters work very efficiently to keep the occupants cosy and warm.

Safety

Pilgrim have a high regard for the personal safety of their customers; this is why the sumo chassis is made from such strong material and plenty of it. It has a massive steel transmission tunnel backbone and panelled steel bulkheads braced to the main chassis structure. The chassis stiffness has been tested by the Dutch RDW and was found to be satisfactory both longitudinally and torsionally. Seat belt anchorages have been tested and passed by the British authorities to the rigorous requirements of regulation 14.02 of European Type Approval. The test involves applying over 4 tonnes pulling force to the anchorage positions.

You want a Sumo but you simply dont have the time, or facilities?

That's fine, we can provide a turnkey Sumo. This PDF document shows how prices work out in the case of a Sumo equipped with a Rover V8 engine. Built by our highly experienced mechanics in our own workshops to the highest standards, our turnkey Sumo is a head turning work of art.
All you have to do is tell us what engine you want, choose your interior trim and the paint colour and leave it to us.

Pilgrim turnkey cars are amongst the safest to be found within the specialist car industry. We spend a great deal of time and money having our cars examined, tested and approved by various British and European road traffic authorities. The Sumo has been tested by the Dutch road traffic authorities and has been granted full Dutch type approval. Seat belt anchorage tests were conducted to the rigorous requirements of ECE regulation 14.02 and passed with a comfortable margin. Various other tests have been conducted by the very strict German TUV authorities. We intend to implement all the requirements of full British and European type approval. To that end we have improved the safety specifications of the Sumo by incorporating tested and approved burst proof door locking mechanisms and striker pins. We have positioned the fuel tank in a well protected area and provided a metal bulkhead "firewall" separating the occupants from the engine compartment in the event of an engine fire.

We are extremely confident that no other specialist car producer can boast a better list of safety specifications than are present on our Sumo.

You want to Build Your Own Sumo?

That's also fine! We offer a detailed assembly instruction manual. This PDF gives you an idea of cost. A few of the pages from the assembly manual are shown below. It takes you all the way through the assembly process. Starting with a list of the parts required , then building the rolling chassis, fitting the body, installing the electrics, trimming and finishing and even fitting the hood.
